The Friends of the Richmond Mounted Squad was formed in 1991 as a civilian support group to provide awareness, opportunity and financial support to the Richmond Police Mounted Unit.  Over the years the Friends have purchased horses and trailers, saddles and other equipment, provided special training and covered expenses to participate in events and competitions.  Today it faces its greatest challenge yet – to raise supplemental funds to construct a new stable facility complex.  The current facility, built in 1970, is no longer suitable for proper turnout, care, or safety. In fact, it was deemed unfit and outdated in 2001 by Richmond City Council!  After years of existing and working there, it has become clear that necessary improvements would be not possible due to lack of space, age, and its geographical location adjacent to roads and overpass. Recurrent flooding and unsafe training areas, as well as less than one acre of open space create an ongoing struggle for officers to keep their horses healthy and in top physical and mental condition.
