South River Falls Loop Trail Hike   3.5 miles   Sunday 10/30/16

Skyline Drive is beautiful this time of year, and a perfect time to hike with RSC friends, old and new!

Distance: 3.3-mile circuit

Difficulty: moderate. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, a thicker/supportive sole suggested as the descent starts off fairly rocky and uneven and improves on the loop back.

Duration: 2¼ hours, possibly longer depending on pace of group.

Elevation Gain: 910-foot elevation gain

What to wear: Dress in layers for temperature control.

What to bring: plenty of water and lunch or a snack to eat at the observation (halfway) point. Hiking poles if you use them.

South River Falls Trailhead is located in the South District at mile 62.7 on the Skyline Drive. It’s the entrance that you pass on the right as you start heading down the mountain towards Massanutten. There is a $20 per car fee to get in to the park. Seniors 62 or older can buy a lifetime pass for $10. Once through the gate, turn right and follow the signs about 4 miles to the parking lot on the right.

Interested hikers can meet at the Ashland Park and Ride on Ashland Road in the west end at 9:00 a.m. to car pool, share gas, and entry fee. It is about an hour and a half drive from the park and ride. Those coming from another direction can meet at the South River Picnic grounds parking lot.

There are facilities with running water at the start/end point.

Please let me know if you will be joining. Subject to cancelation based on weather.
