BIKE RIDE:   CAPITAL TRAIL RIDE with Lunch/Brunch at Williamsburg Winery

Date:  Saturday, April 16 2016 @9:30 a.m.
Meet:   Chickahominy Riverfront Park at the intersection of Route 5 and the Chickahominy River.

We will ride along the Capital Trail from Chickahominy Riverfront Park to Jamestown Settlement, then along a short stretch of the Colonial Parkway, then Treasure Island Road to the Williamsburg Winery.  The Tavern at the winery happily accepts bicyclists at their best or worst in cycling gear.  You can view the menu for Gabriel Archer’s Tavern at:  http://gabrielarchertavern.com/    The tavern has reasonable prices, great service, good food, and hopefully our group will be seated with a view of the vineyards as we were last year.

The total round-trip mileage for this ride is 24 miles.  It covers some of the most historic land in the USA and has water views of Jamestown Island along the Parkway.  Some cyclists may want to add the loop around Jamestown Island on the return trip which would add 8 miles to the trip.   We will spend 3 1/2 miles on the Colonial Parkway where you can expect only light traffic.  We will be fine and will be expected to keep single file on the Parkway as the Park Service enforces single file and will ticket those who don’t.  The payback is that it is a beautiful ride.  Leisurely pace for most of us but faster riders are welcome.  Very flat paved surface so most any style bike is good.

  • Bring:   Helmets (required!), water, sunscreen, and money for lunch—or lunch.

Directions:
Via Route 5:  Take Route 5 east; from downtown Richmond approx 40 miles.
Just after you cross the bridge over the Chickahominy River, the park is immediately on the left. You’ll see a parking lot, campground, and pool. We’ll meet in the parking lot.

Via I-64: GPS or Mapquest:   Chickahominy Riverfront Park,  1350 John Tyler Highway,
Williamsburg, VA 23185

We will meet in the pool parking lot at 9:30 a.m. to sign in and be “in the saddle” at 9:45 a.m.  Note:  there are restrooms at the starting point and at the seven mile point, so you can drink coffee in the morning.
